A letterpress workshop delivered by Thin Ice Press.

Colour is crucial to Harland Miller’s art. He has suggested, for instance, that ‘pink … suggests levity, the same subject in green has more gravity’. Join us for a fun workshop on colour and its impacts. Participants will create a set of keywords in wood type, and we will print them in multiple colours, playing with meaning, visual effect, and emotion. All participants will go home with a set of A3 posters, celebrating what colour can do, and how Miller’s work helps us to experience it differently.

Participants will learn the basics of letterpress, and will hand set metal type in order to create a snappy txt abbreviation or communication. In this workshop, participants will get to grips with the basics of letterpress printing. You will learn to compose metal type in order to print a short quotation from Poe. We will print the results on a tabletop Adana press, and close the session with a fun few minutes of printing overlapping words and phrases, inspired by Miller’s passion for letters and type as visual art.
